‘thoughts’
Yuuske Urameshi, spirit detective and relative punk around
his school, trudged slowly up the flight of stairs that led to Genkai’s
sanctuary. His mind still filled with the terror that Toguro had placed in him,
Yuuske made his way determinedly up the stairs. Finally, he came to the top and
went over to the central building. He smirked as he saw his mentor sitting
calmly in front of a shrine. “Hey. Long time no see,” he said as he came in a
bit into the room.
“So, you have returned. Do you expect more training?”
Genkai asked sarcastically, not even moving as her gravelly voice mocked her
student.
But Yuuske wasn’t really in the mood for arguing. “Yea
Grandma. But this time is serious. I have two months to get real strong for the
Dark Tournament. You gonna help me or what?” he asked as he let his pack fall to
the ground.
Turning slowly, Genkai looked at Yuuske silently, eyes
piercing as she measured what he had just said. Smirking, she bowed her head
slightly. “Very well. But don’t expect me to be gentle with you! We’re going to
whip you into shape!” she stated harshly as she glared at him.
Smirking, Yuuske winked. “That’s all I ask, Grandma. I’ll
do anything,” he replied quietly, filled with determination. He looked over as
he heard footsteps and found himself staring at the one that entered.
A young woman about the same age as him stood in the
doorway. Her raven black hair flowed gently around her as her pale blues pierced
through him. She came farther into the room and it was shown that she wore a
black leather catsuit that molded to her body where it was seen under the black
cloak she wore. High heel boots clicked on the wooden floor as she stepped in.
She cocked an eyebrow as she put her hand on her hip and looked Yuuske up and
down slowly. “So Genkai…who’s the punk kid?” The soft, yet scathing voice
snapped Yuuske out of the trance he’d been in and he growled indignantly.
Genkai hid a smirk before replying, “This is Yuuske
Urameshi. He’ll be training with us for the next two months.”
Snorting softly in disbelief, the young woman walked in and
looked him up and down again. “You’re kidding, right? This guy’s just a punk!”
she exclaimed in disgust as she wrinkled her nose. She turned back to Genkai as
Yuuske growled again.
“Just who do you think you are?! You just walk in here like
you own the place!” Yuuske shouted at the young woman, and then blinked as
Genkai chuckled in amusement.
“Meet my current pupil, Naria Fuin. She’s been training
with me for the past five months and she’ll be training you as well,” Genkai
introduced as she walked between them.
“Train me?! She’s just a girl!” Yuuske’s voice was filled
with incredulity as it echoed around the court and room.
“Is that a challenge?” Naria’s voice held both amusement
and danger as she arched an eyebrow over at him. “Step outside, little boy.
Let’s see what you got,” she put up challengingly as she walked past him.
“Gladly,” Yuuske growled out, though a smirk of enjoyment
passed over his lips as he followed her out to the courtyard. They faced off
with each other, each gauging the other silently as the wind blew around them.
Yuuske suddenly jumped to the attack, growling as he raced towards her. 'This’ll
be a piece of cake…she’s in those heels and is just a girl…’ he thought as he
swung at her. He blinked as he missed, her head not even moving as she gazed at
him in boredom. He growled again, enraged, as he began swinging at her. She
didn’t seem to even move as he kept missing, growing angrier as they fought.
“What are you trying to hit, little boy?” Naria asked with
a smirk as she dodged another hit before lifting a hand and smacking him across
the face. He grunted as he stumbled back slightly, rubbing his cheek as he
glared at her. She snorted as she put a hand on her hip. “Pathetic…you can’t
even get a hit in! How do you expect to beat Toguro and his team?” she asked
snidely as she flipped her hair over her shoulder.
Yuuske stopped and stared at her in surprise. “How do you
know about Toguro?” he asked quietly as he stood straighter after wiping his
mouth slightly.
Naria smirked at him. “Forgot to say I’m telepathic,” she
replied as she looked at her nails in boredom. “Do you think that Toguro will be
easy on you? You have NO idea of his power and the cruelty within him,” she
informed him softly, her eyes narrowed dangerously as she gazed at Yuuske. “He
will kill any innocent if it suits him, no remorse, no caring even if they BEG
for their lives. He’ll rape, torture, and even play with his victims until he is
bored. He will do whatever he can to challenge his adversaries…that includes
your family AND friends,” she explained darkly, her eyes glinting with a hidden
rage and knowledge that startled Yuuske.
Eyes narrowing as well, Yuuske listened to her, his jaw
tense. He remembered the power that Toguro had shown before and trembled. “I
will stop him,” he whispered softly in determination.
Snorting, Naria spat on the ground. “If you can’t even hit
a human girl, what makes you think you’ll beat that demon?! You’re just a punk
kid who thinks he’s pretty hot…try explaining that to the dead bodies of your
loved ones when you fail,” she spat out derisively.
Snarling in rage as his ki glowed brightly around him,
Yuuske attacked. “Shut up!!” He attacked her swiftly, his punches increasing in
speed and strength as she dodged them. Suddenly, she was blocking them, a smirk
on her lips as they fought. He dodged her attacks, using his anger to fuel his
strength as he challenged her. He cried out suddenly as she punched him in the
stomach and did a roundhouse kick, sending him flying a few feet before skidding
to a stop. He grunted as he leaned up, then his eyes widened as he saw a heel in
his face, an inch from his nose.
Naria smirked down at him. “Not bad, punk…maybe there’s
hope for you yet,” she stated softly before putting her foot down and helping
him up.
“Are you two done now?” Genkai asked in amusement as she
came over slowly, hands behind her back.
Smirking, Yuuske wiped his mouth of the blood that had come
from his cracked lip. “Yea, Grandma…” he replied with a sneer.
“Good…time to begin your training, Yuuske Urameshi. Are you
ready?” Genkai questioned with a cocked eyebrow. Nodding, the spirit detective
took his orders and the training began. He just hoped it would be enough.
*~~**~~*
Whether it was enough or not wasn’t proven for a bit as
both Naria and Genkai trained him hard. Slowly though, his speed and attacks
grew as they worked him. Laps were run around the mountains, sparring occurring
randomly as they ran with him. The one who fought him the most was Naria as she
taught him how to use a sword as well as new fighting techniques. They would
often fight until the early morning hours, only to have to get up four hours
later for more training.
But Yuuske didn’t complain. He knew he had to do this, so
he fought as hard as he could, giving everything as he felt his strength
growing. But he still wasn’t sure it was enough. What he was also wasn’t sure
about were his growing feelings for Naria. He knew that he cared dearly for
Keiko…she was one of the reasons why he was training so hard. But, as he trained
with Naria, he found that the spark he’d felt when they’d first met was growing
steadily. She understood him, knew what it meant to be a good fighter and what
to do for the ones he cared for. She also pushed him to his limits, never
letting up on him so he would go to a new level with each turn.
She was a mystery to him though. Her knowledge of Toguro
had startled him at the beginning as well as her other secrets. Who was she? Why
did she come to Genkai and where had she learned to fight before? Why was she
training anyways? So many questions faced him as he got to know her slowly,
getting her to open up somewhat here and there as they fought. Sometimes,
instead of fighting, they would just talk at night, looking up at the stars as
they relaxed after the long day of training. Yuuske found himself liking those
times more and more…and found himself thinking less and less of Keiko.
These thoughts were occupying the young man’s mind as he
searched for Naria. It was close to the moon’s rising and they usually would
spar for a while under the moonlight. Yuuske shook his head as he found himself
remembering how Naria had looked under the moonlight. He couldn’t let himself
get distracted…no matter how much he wanted to take away the sadness in her eyes
when he caught her thinking on something.
After a bit, he finally came upon her in a clearing where
she was practicing her sword moves. He just watched as she slashed through the
air swiftly, obviously having moved from the slower moves already. He smirked as
she suddenly jumped up and attacked him. ‘Knew she heard me…ah well, got a great
view before she started to play,’ he thought with a chuckle as he dodged her
attack and swung out with his leg. She blocked it easily with her arm and
smirked at him before flipping again. Her sword disappeared and they began
sparring, their arms and legs moving so fast that no human eye could keep up
with their movements.
They sparred for an hour, neither giving nor taking a lead
as they attacked and defended. Finally, they parted slightly and sat down,
panting for air as a cool wind came up and helped to cool them off.
“You were deep in thought, Yuuske. Something wrong?” Naria
asked softly as she leaned back on her hands and stretched out next to him.
Shrugging so he wouldn’t stare at the expanse of belly that
suddenly showed itself, Yuuske looked up at the stars. “Just…wondering about
you, I guess,” he replied quietly. They’d taken up being very honest with each
other since he knew she could read his mind.
“Me, huh? What about me? Typical teenage thoughts or deeper
stuff?” Naria’s teasing voice brought a grin to Yuuske’s face as he brought his
gaze back to her.
“Eh, both I guess. You’re not half bad to look at, you
know,” Yuuske commented with a wink. She chuckled wryly as she shook her head
and plucked at some grass. He grew slightly serious as he watched her.
“Naria…why are you here with Genkai? And how do you know about the Toguro
brothers?” he asked quietly.
Sighing softly, Naria looked out over the field, her eyes
sad as she chewed on her cheek. “I suppose I should tell you. I’m here so I can
get stronger…and how do I know the Toguro brothers? They killed my family and
took away my brother. They also gave me this scar,” she explained quietly as she
took off the leather collar she always wore around her neck, revealing a deep
long scar that went across her neck. Yuuske’s eyes widened as he stared at the
scar, and then looked back up at her. She smiled slightly as she put her collar
back on. “About a year ago, Toguro and his gang attacked my family’s sanctuary.
We were famous as both fighters and healers, for we have the healing power
within us. He and his gang killed my father and younger brother, then raped my
sisters and my mother before killing them. They were just about to do the same
to me when my older brother, Teiro, stopped them. Impressed or something with
his power, they took him after slitting my throat. He managed to heal me enough
that I could survive before they took him away,” she said softly as she stared
down at her hands.
“Naria…” Yuuske whispered softly, his eyes wide as he
stared at her in horror. His face grew hard as he all but shook with rage.
“That…that monster! He’s going to pay!” he snarled out softly as his hands
clenched into fists.
“Not as you are now, Yuuske. Nor as I am…I vowed that day
that I would kill him and his gang and get my brother back,” Naria whispered
softly. No tears came to her eyes, only a hard determination. Yuuske reached a
hand up, but it stopped halfway. He couldn’t understand her pain, not in the
least. Sure, he’d gone through hell and such trying to get alive…but she’d lost
her family and all she’d known. He understood then why she pushed him so hard.
She knew the same could happen to him if he didn’t try to do his best. He knew
then that he would do his best…push himself to his limit and beyond.
“Come on, Yuuske…the night is young and we still have a lot
of whipping up to do for you.” Naria’s voice held humor this time as she got up
and winked down at him.
Grinning back, Yuuske got up. “You got that right, babe.
Let’s do it!” As he got ready to spar again, Yuuske made a silent vow to become
his best…and avenge her loss.
