~~**~~ Flashback.

Duo panted as he ran through the forest. He’d been on the run for three days now, hoping to find what he had been sent to search for.  Stopping by a tree, he tried to catch his breath, keeping a wary eye out behind him. ‘Looks like they haven’t caught up to me yet…good, I can rest a bit then,’ he thought to himself, then slid down next to the tree as he tried to catch his breath.  As he sat there, his mind went over the past couple of days. The moments that had changed life in his kingdom forever.

Duo smiled softly as he played his flute for his brother, King Yuy.  They both were sitting in a field surrounded by their happy subjects on a beautifully sunny day, just relaxing.  Heero sighed softly as he listened to Duo playing, always grateful to his loving brother for the caring that came through.  Some girls came near by, giggling as they offered the two royals some flowers filled with nectar. Smiling graciously, they both took the offerings and sipped from the petals.

Sighing as he leaned back and set his flute down, Duo said, “Brother….I heard earlier from some scouts that King Treize of the Warlock Kingdom has started raising his troops up at our border.”  He looked over and saw the slight frown on his brother’s face and knew his information to be confirmed. Sitting up, he lowered his voice and asked, “Brother….what shall we do? We cannot withstand a prolonged attack by the Warlocks.”

Heero sighed and took off his crown, the gentle moonstones glittering in the pale gold band.  “I know it, Duo.  But….there is one hope.  But it is a long shot,” the king stated softly as he fingered the crown.

Duo leaned in and wrapped his hand around Heero’s, setting it against the crown. “What is it, Heero? You can tell me,” he queried soothingly, cobalt and violet locking in worry.

Heero opened his mouth to say something when a young scream was heard.  Getting up swiftly, Heero placed his crown back onto his head, then grabbed his staff, noting that Duo had grabbed his own staff as well.  A young male came up to them, panting in fear, then knelt before them. “My Lord.  We have goblins invading us from the South! Sir, the warlocks have joined with them!” the youth cried frantically.

“No! Brother, I will gather our troops and go the South. We can defeat them…” Duo began, but Heero raised a hand, cutting him off silently.

Staring down at the youth, Heero ordered, “Gather our best warriors and spellcasters. I will see them in my throne room.” The youth nodded then took off, going as swiftly as possible. Heero turned to his brother and said softly, “Brother…I wish to ask of you a favor.”

Duo knelt at his brother’s feet and took the proffered hand. “Ask, my brother. You know I will serve you and our kingdom to my death,” he replied softly, then looked up, smiling.

Heero smiled back, and then stated solemnly, “Duo, I have thought long on this news. I know now that we do not have the strength to fight off both the Warlocks and the Goblins.  What’s more is that I have also heard that the gremlins have also sided with those two lands. We can not fight that much without help.  Duo…I need to you to go on a special journey for me.” Duo nodded once, saying nothing as he waited for Heero to continue grimly.  Taking a deep breath, Heero closed his eyes, and then brought his staff up. It glowed for a minute, and then a picture showed in the globe at the end of it. Opening his eyes, he stared down into his beloved brother’s eyes. “Brother, this is the land of the Dragons…the noblest of all the lands. Here, there is said to be a Unicorn Child whose gentle light will help those who ask of its help.  But only the Dragon Wizard knows where the child is. Go to them. Find the Wizard and ask for his help. But remember this….only those pure of heart may find and touch the Unicorn Child.  I am sending you because you are indeed that. Please Duo. Do not fail us,” Heero pleaded softly.

Duo smiled softly, touched beyond words at his brother’s trust. Standing, he embraced his brother in a tight hug. “My brother….My king. I will not fail you and I shall bring back our salvation,” he declared solemnly.  Heero’s hold tightened on him as he sighed in relief, then blinked as Duo pulled back slightly.  They kissed lightly, a loving kiss that was a farewell.  Duo then pulled back all the way and grabbed his cloak, wrapping it around his shoulders.  He smiled reassuringly at his brother before turning and heading off for the East.

Duo sighed softly as he leaned his head against his knees, trying not to cry. He had been moving constantly, for once he was out of his kingdom, Treize had sent one of his best huntsmen after him, hounding him constantly.  Not even allowed the time to sleep, Duo kept running, feeling himself grow weaker the farther he got from his home. He knew his people could survive outside of their kingdom, but it wasn’t without some debilitations.

He sighed again, and then froze as he heard some howls in the distance. The hounds had found his trace again!  Scrambling to his feet, Duo began to run again, dodging between the trees. Finally, he came to a stream and waded through it, knowing it would throw his scent off for a bit.  Jumping up to the other side of the stream, Duo began running again.

So distracted was he that he failed to see the young blond man that was walking down the trail in front of him.  Looking up suddenly, Duo had but a second to cry out before the two collided and fell to the ground.

“Oh my gosh are you alright?!” Duo cried swiftly as he sat up from where he was laying on top of the man.  He opened his mouth to ask again, and then stopped, blinking in silent wonder.  The man was pale, with light blond hair that shimmered in the sun.  The man’s eyes opened revealing aquamarine eyes that shimmered like the sea.  The youth stared at Duo for a minute, confused, and then smiled slightly.

“Yes, I’m alright.  Are you ok? What has you in such a hurry anyway?” the young blond asked then took the hand that Duo offered and was pulled up.  Dusting himself off, the young man then looked at Duo and smiled again. “My name’s Quatre. What’s yours?” he asked softly, shyly.

Duo blinked and for once found himself unable to speak. He’d never met someone like Quatre before and found that the blond bewitched him. Finally, after shaking himself, Duo grinned and said sheepishly, “My name’s Duo. I didn’t mean to run into you…but…I…” he trailed off, uncertain if he should involve this young beauty in his problems.

Suddenly, in the distance, howls could be heard, swiftly coming nearer.  Duo gasped softly then looked around. ‘No...have to hide or…’ he thought to himself frantically.  He blinked when Quatre walked past him all of a sudden…and saw his escape.

Quatre looked around concerned. ‘Those are hunting dogs….from the Warlock kingdom.  But why are they here in this country?’ he thought to himself, and then saw a slight shimmer from the corner of his eye.  Turning swiftly, he blinked. Nothing was there.

Turning again, he opened his mouth to speak to Duo, then stopped, confused. ‘Where did he go?’ he wondered as he looked for the chestnut haired traveler he had ‘bumped’ into.  Suddenly, he was distracted from his thoughts as a riding party rode up.  Quatre looked up at the head huntsman and held his breath.

The youth atop the horse looked down at him, green piercing eyes gazing through him as long sandy brown hair swept across his face. Softly, the youth questioned, “You….have you seen a youth running through here? He has a long braid and violet eyes.”

Quatre blinked, and then replied, “No sir, I have not.”

The two stared at each other for a span of time, testing each other.  But, then the huntsman nodded once, accepting the verdict before turning his horse back down the path.  As he left though, he looked over his shoulder at the young blond and smiled slightly, letting the young man know that he was safe for now.

Quatre waited until they were gone then heaved a sigh of relief.  He didn’t know how, but he just knew that they were looking for Duo and that it was not for good purposes.  Suddenly, a loud sigh came from above, startling him and he whipped around, coming face to face with relieved violet eyes.

“Whew! I thought I was caught for sure!” Duo exclaimed as he swung down from the tree above them and landed in front of Quatre, smiling.  Quatre smiled back and then looked down as Duo extended his hand.  “I don’t know how to thank you. If Treize’s hunter caught me, then my kingdom would be doomed,” Duo stated softly, gratitude evident in his voice.

Quatre smiled and took the offered hand, shaking it firmly. “I’m glad I could help,” he replied softly and Duo smiled back.  They stood awkwardly for a minute, and then Duo sighed softly in regret.  He turned to leave, and then slowly slid to the ground. “Duo! What’s wrong?!” Quatre cried out as he raced forward, catching the longhaired youth as he fell.

Duo moaned softly, his head lolling back to blink weary eyes up at Quatre. “So tired….but I have to keep going….promised…my…brother…” he murmured softly before his eyes closed and he passed out.

Quatre sighed softly as he poked at the fire he had built.  He looked over at the youth that was now wrapped securely up inside of his blanket, sleeping.  He frowned in thought as he watched the young stranger with whom he was already sharing an adventure.  He had a strange feeling that he and this young man were destined for a great adventure.  He smiled slightly as he saw Duo flip to his side, his hand unconsciously curling under his face.

Silently, he crawled over to the sleeping youth and brushed the chestnut bangs lightly aside so he could gaze at the gentle face.  Gentle curves shaped his cheeks, soft lips curved into a gently sad smile, while long lashes hid the violet gems that could bring a light of joy to one’s heart.  Smiling again, Quatre just watched the youth’s face as he slept.

A few hours later, Duo woke up to the smell of some meat cooking over a fire.  He grimaced at the smell, then sniffed some more.  His mouth watered as he smelled steaming greens and roots, probable sides to the meat.  He turned over and blinked a bit as he looked at the blond next to the fire.  The recent events came back to him in a rush and he sat up, adrenaline pumping away his weariness.

Quatre looked up, startled as Duo sat up, looking around scared.  Getting up, Quatre went over swiftly to the frantic young man, and then placed a soothing hand on Duo’s arm, kneeling down next to him and locking eyes with him. Smiling gently, he murmured, “Easy….you’re safe.  The huntsman is no where near here and doesn’t know you’re here.”

Duo stared into the aquamarine gaze as he tried to assimilate this new information, then smiled, laughing self consciously as he replied, “Man….that’s a rush! I’ve been on the run so long that I thought I was captured for sure!”

Quatre smiled and shook his head, then went back to the fire, taking the food off of the fire, testing it for readiness.  He looked up as Duo came over by him, and then offered him one of the pieces of rabbit.  He blinked in surprise as he saw Duo turn slightly green and look away.  Frowning as he filed this tidbit of information away in his mind, Quatre reached over and grabbed the packet of large leaves and opened them, revealing steamed roots and leaves as well as some seeds.  He turned and offered them instead, then snickered as Duo’s eyes lit up and he got an almost pleading look in his eyes, silently asking for permission.  Chuckling, he nodded and laid them onto a rock, then watched as the obviously starving longhaired man dug into the vegetation with a relish. ‘So….he’s a vegetarian. Will have to remember that…’ Quatre thought to himself as he ate the pieces of rabbit himself, noting that Duo turned away so he wouldn’t see Quatre eating the food.

Duo sighed loudly once he had finished with his vegetables and seeds then patted his stomach.  Smiling over at the amused Quatre, he stated, “Now THAT was a great meal!”  Quatre laughed softly, shaking his head, and then looked up as Duo got up and stretched.  Looking down at Quatre, he said, “I need a bath, so I’m just going to go over to that waterfall that I know is nearby and freshen up, k?”

Quatre smiled and nodded, then watched the other youth leave.  He poked at the fire, and then sighed.  Getting up, he followed where Duo had gone, worried that the young man might need a back up.

At least….that was his outside excuse.

Duo sighed softly as he took off his clothes, letting them fall to the ground.  He stretched again, and then slowly unbraided his hair as he walked into the cool water, heading for the falls for a nice cleaning.  He reached over to some of the reeds and yanked the cattails off.  A soft glitter filled the air around them, and then parted to reveal that they had been healed as their beheader walked off with the cattails.  He looked down at them, then smirked as the glitter showed there, turning the cattails into soap.  He lathered it up, and then washed his hair, rinsing it underneath the falls before cleaning his body.  He smirked as he felt eyes watched him, and then stretched again, letting the water course down his muscular body.

Quatre watched the other man silently, eyes wide at the gentle beauty as it was cleaned and brought out to perfection.  Knee-length chestnut hair clung to the tightly muscled body as it moved underneath the water.  He looked up and saw the slight smirk on the perfectly curved lips and felt his breath catch.  He swallowed hard as Duo moved through the water slowly, and then came out of it, mesmerized by the fluid movements.

Suddenly, his eyes widened and he gasped softly as Duo turned away from him.

Duo….had fairy wings.
