‘thoughts’

Wufei sat at the kitchen table, distractedly stirring a cup of tea that had long since gone cold. Yellow sunshine glowed on his face as he stared out the window, his eyes empty, and his mind a million miles away. A dejected sigh barely escaped him as his thoughts spun around and around like water going down a drain to the dark recesses below. Back to sadness. Always sadness.

Trowa silently came into the kitchen, intent on getting some water, when the scene before him stopped him in his tracks. Silently, he gazed at the despairing Chinese man, green eyes unreadable as he read the body language. Making up his mind, he came over and leaned against the kitchen counter, in clear view for Wufei. "Is something the matter?" he asked softly, his arms crossed over his chest as he gazed at Wufei.

"Sorry?" Wufei said, startled from his trance. The cup of tea he had been playing with fell over, spilling onto the table. Growling a curse, Wufei jumped out of his chair before any could spill on him. Still mumbling angrily, he grabbed a towel and began wiping up the mess. "I'm sorry. Did you say something?"

Coming over to help mop up the mess with some napkins, Trowa didn't reply right away. After they had cleaned up the mess, he asked softly, "Want to talk about what is bothering you?" He went and threw away the sopping wet napkins, then returned to his spot by the counter.

"Who said something was bothering me?" Wufei muttered, his back to Trowa as he rinsed the towel off and hung it by the sink to dry.

Smirking slightly, Trowa shook his head. "You've been staring out the window most of today, brooding more than usual, and you just spilled tea. This isn't like you, Wufei," he explained quietly as he crossed his arms over his chest.

Wufei took a deep breath. He let out a heavy sigh. Why did Trowa have to be so damn observant all the time? Or was it becoming obvious? "It's not important." Wufei turned and looked at Trowa, their eyes meeting. "Really."

Trowa didn't say anything as he gazed at Wufei, then he smirked and closed his eyes. "All right," he responded softly as he straightened and headed for the door. He stopped though just before leaving and added quietly, "But if you want to talk...you know where I am."

Wufei watched silently as Trowa walked out the open doorway and disappeared around the corner. With a groan, he slumped against the countertop, hands rising to his face and rubbing his temples in hard, slow circles. He glanced out the sunny window, eyes lingering on the cherry blossom tree just outside. His hands fell to his sides and he turned from the window, shoulders slumped as he trudged out of the kitchen and back to his room.

Green eyes watched from the shadows as Wufei went back to his room, then a soft sigh escaped them the delicately curved mouth under them. Trowa came out, uncertain on what to do. Clearly, Wufei was hurting, but his pride made him stay silent. Trowa looked down thoughtfully then smirked slightly. He went into the kitchen and made up a small tray of sandwiches and tea, then looked outside. The small picnic table under the sakura tree would work wonderfully...

Quietly, he went outside and placed the tray there, arranging it before going back inside. He went to Wufei's room and knocked politely on the door. "Wufei?" There was no answer. In the dark solitude of his room, Wufei curled up on his bed, wanting to be left alone. Trowa sighed softly, then frowned. At times, he wished he was more like Quatre, but he knew that Wufei needed to talk and being alone didn't always solve everything. So, against his usual code of 'Leave and let be', he opened the door and peered in. "Wufei...come out and join me, please." he requested softly, his eyes taking in the lone figure on the bed.

"Go away, Barton," Wufei commanded, his voice more abrasive than he'd intended.

"No." Trowa's voice was soft, but firm as he came in. "It's a lovely day and I wish to have lunch and tea with you outside. Join me," he added in a voice that brooked no argument.

Wufei sat up. "Outside," he muttered to himself. He looked up at Trowa, confusion on his face as he asked, "You want to eat... outside?"

"Yes, outside. In the sun...with fresh air." Trowa's voice held amusement as he smirked slightly, his arms crossing over his chest. "Even we soldiers need fresh air occasionally," he stated wryly. Sighing and shaping his mouth into a scowl, Wufei stood and nodded, following Trowa out of the room and outside. Smirking in triumph before schooling his features, Trowa led the way outside to the picnic table. He gestured for Wufei to sit down as he sat as well.

Wufei grabbed a sandwich and tore into it, determined not to enjoy himself. The two ate in silence. But Trowa wasn't as put off as Wufei was hoping. He sighed softly as he leaned back, looking around him. "It is beautiful, isn't it?" he asked quietly before sipping his tea.

"Isn't what beautiful?" Wufei grumbled around a bite of chicken salad.

"The land. So much better than the colonies," Trowa answered, unperturbed by the sour comment. He brought his gaze back to Wufei. "So peaceful."

Wufei snorted and glanced around. "Anywhere seems peaceful when there aren't bullets flying past your head." His gaze leveled off with Trowa's and the two boys stared at one another across the table.

Smirking slightly, Trowa nodded slightly. "Very true. But it seems to be especially peaceful here. Full of...memories, perhaps," he suggested before sipping his tea once again.

A sour smirk crept up Wufei's face. "You’re the last person I'd expect to be talking about peaceful memories."

Shrugging slightly as he put his cup down, Trowa gazed at Wufei emotionlessly. "We all have them," he replied simply as he leaned back in his chair. Wufei spent a long moment scrutinizing his comrade's face, trying to figure out what the other boy was after. It was hardly like Trowa to be this... inquisitive, even in such a roundabout way as this. Staring impassively back, Trowa kept his face stoic. He'd made his offer earlier and it was up to Wufei to reveal what was bothering him. He wasn't one to push when it dealt with feelings.

Not getting anything from Trowa's face, Wufei turned his attentions to his tea. He took sip, deciding that a change in subject might be the best way to break the discomfort he was feeling. "Is Quatre still due in Tuesday?" he asked impassively.

Nodding as he took his cup again, Trowa sipped his tea before saying, "Duo will be in not long after as well. It will be nice to see them."

"Nice to see them, yes, but I could go without hearing Maxwell for a while longer." Wufei finished his tea and stood. "Thank you for lunch, Trowa," he said. He began to turn, but stopped, looking back for a second. "And for the company." With a small smile, Wufei turned and went back into the house. Smiling softly as well, Trowa sipped his tea contentedly. At least he had gotten Wufei to smile...
