'thoughts'
The group of humans walked quietly along with Ecthelion as
they went through Tirion towards the tower in the center of the mythic Elven
city. Jenna and Sam would point here and there, talking softly and excitedly as
they saw some new wonder, while Daniel, Teal'c, and Jack remained quiet in their
observations. They noticed that they weren't the only curious ones as Elves came
to windows and doorways, pointing and talking as they saw the newcomers walk by.
A few even waved, smiling as they received waves in return.
But the one thing that came to their attention was that no
young Elves were around, playing or otherwise. Jack frowned slightly, but then
shrugged. They must be in school…
"Ecthelion? Can I ask you something?" Daniel suddenly asked
as he came up to walk beside the Elf once more.
"Of course, Master Daniel Jackson. What may I help you
with?" Ecthelion replied warmly as he bowed his head, though never faltering in
his steps.
"Your people came here way back when. So…how is it we don't
have any history on you? And how did Tolkien write a story that matched
everything here as well as what you claimed?" Daniel asked as he placed his
hands behind his back, leaning in a bit.
Smiling, Ecthelion looked ahead once more. "Before we left,
the Valar had dimmed any mention of our people or what had happened, so it all
became myth. Then, Vairë and Námo stayed behind to watch over you as you grew.
They must have somehow influenced your author Tolkien through his dreams so
that, in a way, history could be made true once more," he murmured, smiling as
Daniel watched him intently, eyes wide.
"You don't know on that?" Daniel asked, confused.
"Nay, young one. What the Valar do is according to the song
of Eru. Only they have ever known what will happen," Ecthelion replied with a
smile.
"Have we ever seen either Vairë or Námo in our history? Or
did they just not meddle?" Jenna asked as she came up, eyes shining with
interest.
"I had heard that they had at one time taken human form to
mingle with your people. I do not know much more from that, however. It may have
been that they were helping to make sure that the future came to be as it should
be," Ecthelion supplied with a tilt of his head as he gazed at her. He frowned
briefly in thought before smiling, an expression too fleeting to catch.
"So they might have come down and impersonated say, a god?"
Jack asked sarcastically as he looked around, and then glared over as Ecthelion
chuckled softly.
"Perhaps. One does not know the way of the Valar. As I
said, they follow the will of Eru, so one does not know why they do such things
until the purpose has been realized," Ecthelion replied with a grin at Jack. He
looked forward once more and smiled. "Ah, we are here. Come, young ones. I am
sure that my Lords and Ladies are waiting for you," he said warmly as he led
them inside the crystal tower.
"Now that is one big crystal," Daniel murmured as they went
in, all looking up as far as they could and still unable to see the top.
Ecthelion just smiled as he led the way through the halls to a large chamber.
The four humans and Jaffa stopped in shock as they saw the
hall that they entered. The walls were made of crystal with hints of gold amidst
its facets. Ornate tapestries hung gracefully along the walls, telling a history
that they thought had only been in fantasy. A large table took up most of the
middle, at which sat several Elves, all watching them with great interest and
welcome as they came in. At the head of the table was a raised dais, on which
sat an ornately carved throne, upon which was seated an Elf that fairly glowed
with stature. Unconsciously, all five bowed their heads in respect before him as
he stood.
"Welcome, children of Arda. We have long awaited your
coming to us and rejoice that you have found your way through the stars." The
soft tenor voice encouraged them to look up as the Elf stood, smiling at them in
warm welcome. "I am Ingwë, High King of all Eldar. I welcome you on behalf of my
people here in Valinor."
"Ingwë? Oh wow…" Jenna whispered in awe as Ecthelion moved
before them, bowing deeply. Her words caused smiles and some laughter to come
from the other Lords and Ladies, making her blush in embarrassment.
"My Liege, may I present Colonel Jack O'Neill, Major
Samantha Carter, Teal'c, Doctor Daniel Jackson, and Doctor Jenna Carter,"
Ecthelion introduced each member and nods were given from the Elves as they
bowed their heads in greeting.
"Hannon le, Ecthelion, for leading them here safely. I am
sure you enjoyed it as well," Ingwë commented wryly to his Captain, who bowed
his head with a grin.
"The Children of Arda are as engaging as always. Just as we
remember, my Liege. May I stay for a little while, or do you require for me to
return to my post?" Ecthelion replied as he straightened.
"You may stay, Ecthelion. A familiar face may put them more
at ease," Ingwë directed with a nod before sitting once more. He focused once
more on the five humans and smiled as he saw a range of emotions within them.
"Please, sit. And eat and drink. Your travels must have been long," he commented
warmly as he waved his hand, urging them to sit.
"Eh, going through a wormhole gets to one, you could say,"
Jack drawled flippantly as they moved in to sit where there was space at the end
of the table. His reply earned laughter and murmurs from the gathered Elves as
Ingwë smiled, though Daniel elbowed his friend subtly in warning. Not showing
his discomfort, Jack smiled wanly. "So, what's this Ecthelion is saying that we
can share with each other? We're not much on technology, though I think our
weapons might be nice here." This last was muttered, but still caused laughter
through the gathered Lords and Ladies as they beamed at him fondly.
Chuckling, Ingwë shook his head. "Nay, young one. We do not
need your weapons, though the offer is kind. But eat first and allow us to share
some of our tale. You see, we have lived in peace here for fifteen centuries,
since we left Arda, or rather Earth as you now call it, after the final battles
with Sauron and his master, the Goa'uld, Morgoth. We had also battled with Ra as
well, helping to cast the Goa'uld from your system before retreating to another
land. Unfortunately, out of revenge, Ra attacked our original home on Arda and
we were forced to abandon the planet for this world. The Valar then placed a
shield around this world so that we would remain in peace, away from their
preying eyes."
The High King spun his tale, entrancing the SG team as they
sat amidst the Elves. At the mention of the Valar, Jack sat back. "So these
Valar...are they some aliens or what? And what's this about a couple of these
Valar staying on Earth and mingling?" he asked, looking skeptical. This was
sounding way too much like some hokey sci-fi movie…
"Aye, the weaver, Vairë, and the Doomsman of the Valar,
Námo, stayed on Arda to watch over Man as they grew in knowledge and strength,
as well as population. They guided you when necessary and, if what I am told is
indeed true, mingled with your people," Ingwë replied with a nod of his head,
smiling warmly at Jack.
"We have encountered an alien race known as the Ancients.
Are your Valar of this race do you know?" Daniel asked in interest as he leaned
forward.
"Nay, young one. They are not…aliens…as you say. But one
does not describe one's gods as aliens unless they prove themselves to be as
such. Nay, they are friend and ally as well as our guides and protectors," Ingwë
answered with an encouraging nod to Daniel.
"So what do you guys want from us in return for sharing
your technology with us?" Jack finally asked as he leaned back, glancing at them
as they whispered softly.
Smiling as he tilted his head forward in appreciation,
Ingwë shifted in his seat. "We would ask that you aid us in a different way.
Aid…in saving our race," he murmured quietly as the room fell silent.
The SG-1 team became silent, stunned at the request. Jack
slowly sat up and leaned his arms on the table as he laced his fingers together.
"Um…say that again?" he asked quietly, disbelieving.
Standing slowly, Ingwë sighed softly, his face as sad as
his subjects as he walked down from the dais to face them. "Our people are dying
out, Master Jack O'Neill. No children have been born among our people in ten
centuries. The last to be born was young Arwen, who sits there next to her
father, Lord Elrond. She is the last of our young ones, and she is now ten
centuries old." The young raven haired she-Elf bowed her head sadly as the
others nodded in gloom-filled agreement. The High King faced the five visitors.
"Our people die now, not of old age for we are immortal, but from a lack of
vitality, of love of life. We are a peaceful people and enjoy creation, but our
faer…our souls…have dimmed as our people slowly fade."
Soft agreement came from the surrounding Elves as they
nodded, looking at the five gathered. "So um…what do you wish us to do?" Daniel
finally asked, fidgeting slightly as he frowned in confusion.
Smiling softly, Ingwë folded his hands before him.
"Introduce into our people a new line. We would ask that you mate with some of
our people so that new life might be given to our race," he stated softly, yet
firmly.
Silence met the request as the team stared at him in shock.
Suddenly Jack stood up and waved his hands. "Wait, wait, WAIT! Wait a second!
You want us to ‘mate’ with a bunch of you to get new blood into your people?!
How do we know that it'll work even?" he demanded as he semi-glared at Ingwë.
"Your people and ours have already mingled, Master O'Neill.
Elrond is proof of this as is his children," one of the Ladies said softly as
she smiled at them while the others nodded, her golden hair gleaming in the
sunlight that floated in around them.
"We are not asking for you five to couple with a group of
us. You are not cattle to be bred nor are we a harem. But you are our only hope
of living on," the Elf next to her added, his silver hair brushing down his
shoulders as he leaned forward slightly to speak.
"And we are asking for others to come. Perhaps the place
that you are basing your explorations from?" another Elf on the other side of
the table added, his soft blue eyes intent upon Sam as he smiled softly.
"Well I don't know. This sounds rather fishy to me. Like
you'll turn into body suckers once we get with ya…" Jack murmured, earning
confused looks from the Elves as he sat down again.
"Body suckers?" Another of the Elves leaned closer,
curiosity in his pale gray eyes. "That sounds rather painful."
Daniel rolled his eyes as Jenna and Sam snickered while
Teal'c cast a 'look' at Jack, making him rub his head. "The point I'm trying to
make is that, how do we know this is not a trap?" he finally said in
exasperation.
"Why not have a couple of us return with you to your world
so that we might appeal to your superiors? That way, you may observe us and know
that we mean you no harm," the golden haired Elf that was eyeing Sam suggested
with a smile as he sat back, relaxing.
Jack glanced at his team members in question and received
shrugs of consent before he returned his attention to Ingwë as the Elf High King
watched them in hope. "Yea ok, I guess that wouldn't hurt. It'd do us all some
good to have both sides see the other before any…alliances…are made." He grinned
as Jenna and Sam giggled softly as they covered their mouths while Daniel
covered his own face with a groan.
To their surprise, the Elves chuckled as well,
understanding the double entendre also. "Very well, Master O'Neill. I think that
young Prince Legolas and our March Warden Haldir will suit your needs then,"
Ingwë agreed congenially, nodding as the two mentioned Elves stood, bowing to
the team. The SG team noted that the Prince was the one who had made the
suggestion in the first place, while the second was a pale blond Elf that had
been sitting next to the first two Elves who had spoken after Ingwë.
"What? No she-Elves?" Jack asked innocently, smirking as
more chuckles greeted his statement.
"Nay, I am afraid not, Master O'Neill. However, we would
ask that you stay for a day so that we might show our hospitality. It would
bring us great joy to show our welcome to you as newcomers," Ingwë replied
warmly as the others nodded in agreement.
"Sure ok. I just need to report back in at the Stargate, if
that's ok with you?" Jack said as they all stood, waving his hand encouragingly.
"I am sure that Ecthelion would be delighted to guide you
once more. As for the rest of you, please follow the servants who shall show you
to your rooms and rest. Explore our land and feel free to ask questions or
experience what we offer," Ingwë suggested with a gentle smile as several
servants came into the hall and directed the rest of the team from the chamber.
Looking back as he went with Ecthelion to the gate, Jack
cocked an eyebrow. 'This is going to be interesting,' he thought before focusing
ahead to where he was going to with Ecthelion.
